Orange County: the beaches, the postcard-perfect weather, the "California Riviera" lifestyle. But your heart lies in wine country. What to do? This is the dilemma Charles Coniglio faces each day. He lives in Santa Ana but has such a passion for wine that he's become a vintner. And he refuses to move north. "There's a lot of action here in Southern California as far as wine consumption, plus I live here, so why not continue to live here?" Coniglio says. Coniglio is the latest in a handful of vintners who get their grapes elsewhere but steadfastly remain in Orange County: …

"The Coniglio's have recruited long time family friend and winemaker Craig Becker... "Those of you who know how great a wine this guy makes should know he is on a roll with this one."...."Although you can stash this in your cellar, it's going to be hard not to take advantage of its accessability right now."

91 points Coniglio 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon (Atlas Peak), $45.
The winemaker emphasizes artisanal techniques on mountain fruit, and this 100% Cabernet certainly has an authentic, hand-made quality. It’s dry, fairly soft and rich in ripe, thick tannins. The fruit is fully ripened, suggesting cherry and blackberry jam with a hint of olive tapenade. Try it now. A wine to watch.
91 Coniglio 2002 Cabernet Franc (Napa Valley), $35.
The grapes are from north of St. Helena, on the Valley floor. They were fully ripened in this hot vintage, and have fleshy, forward flavors of red and black cherries, coffee, orange zest and cocoa. This is an interesting wine, lighter in body than Cabernet Sauvignon, but with depth, complexity and quite a bit of elegance
